The next administration may be friendly towards Canada but who knows if the next one will be? MAGA completely controls the Republican Party, we need to be wary.
I previously hadn't considered the possibility of Canada joining the EU, but I agree with M. Dion. It would be far too complicated for both parties. Both have issues now with reaching consensus.
I can't imagine tossing 10 provinces, 3 territories, two official languages, 1 federal government and several indigenous nations/languages/traditions, with each involving diverse populations and resources and issues, into a pot already boiling up similar issues plus those we can't even see - call it the partridge in a pear tree.
An economic understanding or treaty of some kind would be helpful, I believe - and may segue into something different in 100 years. Start small. Grow it if it works.
“Another thing that shouldt be done, and I openly make the proposal here, is Canada’s membership in the European Political Community (EPC).” Is it “should” or “shouldn’t”? I interpret “should” but you might want to correct the ambiguity!
I fully agree with Stephane Dion. I see no advantage to us creating a strong and fully sovereign Canada only to become subsumed by Europe. Do deals and the EPC. But, I have to remember that I have some left over Euros from trip to Spain that I could use, if...
Are we tone deaf? Truth and Reconciliation? Joining Europe that colonized Canada's First Peoples and most of the rest of the world. Jumping from the frying pan of Trump's Empire into to the European fire that still can't extricate fitself rom the US death grip, while most of the rest of the world is moving on from Empire. Middle Powers are seemingly Muddled Powers, caught between what was and what is becoming.
As a western Canadian, I chafe at the notion that there is some kind of natural gravitational pull that aligns us with the EU. Only in the sense that Canada loves regulating everything to death and has a centralized government structure that is aloof to the needs of a broad spectrum of people.
In this modern world, Canada has a commercial gravitational pull towards Asia that is underdeveloped but stifled by the previously mentioned regulatory constraints. Ottawa likes to wave around all the trade agreements that are being negotiated but stubbornly refuses to streamline the regulations that could get projects to the finish line.
Interesting perspective, but I doubt that after the Trump Administration we will or should return to a cosy relationship with the U.S.
agreed!

Corrected. Thank you!

Agree with M. Dion. Carney’s approach is a good one. It would be just a little silly anyway, as Canada is not geographically connected to Europe.
